This Week in FM has taken a look at the £2.5 billion worth of surplus assets across Local Government and questioned whether they could be put to better use. The findings have been highlighted by the Audit Commission and is calling on councils to ensure they have a strategic approach to managing these assets in order to get the best value for money.

The BBC has recently reported that new research has found local authorities could be "wasting millions" on IT services they could buy cheaper if they used the Government Digital Marketplace frameworks such as G-Cloud.

The Government has recently launched the Local Government Transparency Code 2014. The Code sets out key principles for local authorities in creating greater transparency through the publication of public data. The agenda asks authorities to publish the location of public land and building assets and key attribute information that is normally recorded on asset registers.
